Baby Fair 16 April 2021

Infant Items and Content Market in Korea

The market for baby products and services has been growing even though the number of new-born babies has been dramatically decreasing.

Source: Statistics Korea

Source: Korea Institute for Industrial economics & Trade

In 2020, Korea recorded fewer than 200,000 new-born babies, the lowest for more than 50 years. The number of people opting out of marriage and married couples choosing not to have babies are increasing resulting in a total fertility rate of 0.84 in 2020.  This means that a Korean female between the ages of 15 to 49 is expected to deliver only 0.84 babies.

IRC Consulting visited Cobe Baby Fair, one of the biggest off-line exhibitions in Korea in April 2021. The consultant observed new characteristics of the market at the fair.

Service market

Infant products market growth has plateaued due to the decrease of new-born babies. However, new services for infants and parents are growing. There are many service providers such as baby insurance, education & training, and assistance for new mothers.

Content

Intellectual property is playing a bigger role in infants related market. IP includes characters, education methodologies, theme parks and others. Toys are closely related to characters, stories and education methodologies. Contents need to achieve 2 goals, catching babies’ eyes and maintaining their interest, and providing educational.

COVID-19

The number of attendees was much smaller than at previous fairs. This is probably because expectant mothers and the parents of infants were much more careful about avoiding COVID-19 infection.

Off-line, in-person exhibitions and businesses are expected to return to normal with the rollout of vaccines and the decline of the pandemic. However, we can expect that baby related industries will remain 'untact' for longer and lag behind other sectors as parents of infants exhibit an overabundance of caution in avoiding exposure to the virus.

The 40th annual Cobe Baby fair was held at COEX in Seoul from 15 April ~ 18 April 2021.

Participants: Over 200 companies in Energy industry

Overview

l  Korea is heavily dependent on imports of energy (about 97%)

l  As the electric power system is geopolitically isolated, it is impossible to export and import energy to and from neighboring countries. South Korea is in peninsula and has North Korea in the north.

l  Production of electric power is concentrated in southern provinces and consumption is concentrated in the metropolitan area in the north. And long-distance transport of electric power is essential.

l  With these conditions, large investments are required to build electric power grid in Korea.

Market Structure

l  There is large 6 power generation companies which are subsidiaries of Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO) and relatively small independent power producers.

l  KEPCO transports the electric power it purchased from the Korea Power Exchange through transmission and distribution network and sells to customers.

he sectors Koreans consider important in the future in energy industry are as follows.

l  AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure)

l  Smart City

l  ESS (Energy Storage System)

l  EVC (Electric Vehicle Chargers)

18th Seoul Int’l Cafe Show (Cafe Show 2019)

18th Seoul Int’l Cafe Show (Cafe Show)
November 7th to 10th, 2019
Korea Seoul COEX

Exhibits: Coffee, Tea, Bakery, Desserts, Ice-cream, Chocolate, Beverage, Raw Materials, Machinery & Equipment, Interior, Franchise & Start-up, Kitchen Appliances, Food Service Industry

Organized by Exporum, the Café Show is globally known. The Café Show helps visitors and exhibitors to find new potential partners and learn about the industry. There are also a handful of events where visitors can enjoy the experience of coffee. The show expects 600 companies participating and over 160,000 visitors from over 80 countries. The entrance fee is one of the most costly but there was a great amount of coffee, tea and other samples that make up for more than the cost.

The entrance to the show was full of excitement and felt similar to last year. At the entrance of the show, the organizers displayed Cherry’s Choice which shows products that were nominated as the best products from the exhibition. Unlike what was anticipated, there were fewer products related to coffee and more related to other products.

The exhibition was divided into four exhibition areas.

A: Gourmet to Total Equipment
B: Tea to dessert & Item
C: From bean to cup
D: Unique blending

If my memory serves me correctly the Café show in 2018 was mostly focused on coffee and the coffee industry compared to 2019 where there was more tea, bakery and other types of products.

Entering the exhibition through Hall A, the large equipment catches the eyes.  It appears costly but is one of the essential requirements at a café. Most displays were coffee machines with other products such as auto-beverage mixers, ice-cream makers, ice shredders and others.

There were also a number of disposable products such as straws, lids, cups and other products which are for takeout. The trend for these disposable products seems to be towards environmentally friendly products that can be reused or dissolve naturally. However, there were still many companies that did not emphasize environmentally friendly details.

Other related products were different types of syrup and mixes used to make a beverage more appealing and to provide a unique taste to fulfill the needs of consumers.

An interesting fact was that there were three types of alcoholic beverages that did not seem to be a good match for a café show.

Café food products and bakery products also shared a portion of the exhibition space. Most of the dessert products were in final packaging, but bakery products seemed to have bakers making bread and dessert inside the booths promoting their products.

While the first floor was a mixture of all different types of products, the second floor was specialized for coffee. Both halls were related to coffee with Hall C exhibiting beans to coffee and Hall D unique blends. As the exhibition’s focus was coffee, most of the visitors showed more interest in the coffee sections.

We could see a focused group of visitors who were interested in specific types of coffee and beans. We observed long lines for different types of coffee and beans.

Also, booths provided small sessions inviting renowned baristas offering tips and know-how.

Fine Dust & Air Industry Fair

Air Fair 2019 – Fine Dust & Air Industry Fair
October 25th ~ 27th, 2019
Coex, Seoul

Categories of Exhibits:

Air Home Appliances
Air Conditioner-Heater-Ventilator Fan
Air Controlling IoT system
Air Measurement Sensor & Device
Air Controlling & Anti Air Pollution Technology
Anti Air Pollution Equipment.

2018 Exhibition History

Ÿ   90+ exhibitors
Ÿ   10,100+ visitors

Exhibition Overview

The Fine Dust & Air Industry Fair was focused on fine dust and products related to the issues. The majority of the displayed products were consumer products related to filtering fine dust. There were various types of household air cleaners from standing desk size installations and combined with the air-conditioning systems.

LG had the largest booth which was hard to miss. The products were all air cleaning related and for consumer use. Their exhibition design was similar to a household providing all their products with air cleaning functions, which includes air cleaners, air-dressers (Steam closet system), air-condition systems, ceiling fans and built-in environment systems which have an air quality system.

Not all the products were specified for the consumer market. There were also industrial air cleaning systems, filters for air cleaning devices and air quality monitoring systems attracting visitors.

There were some government agencies’ booths which helped provide information on new technology which can be applied in the air industry and air quality control market. An interesting product from the booth was a combination of the fashion and fabric industry, providing cloth which protected consumers from polluted air. The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation also had a booth where they were providing information regarding natural air purifying plants.

Industry:

Unlike most general electronics such as refrigerators, air conditioners or washing machines, air purifiers were considered to be unnecessary until recent changes in environmental conditions. Within the past years, the number of air purifiers and large electronic company air purifier advertisements has increased remarkably.

The increase can be simply because of the increase in life quality in which air quality is a sub-sector. However, Korea has recently experienced a number of issues that have raised the awareness of air quality. There have been incidents like MERS. The outbreak of MERS in 2014 caused 38 death and led to changes in the air quality control regulations. Since 2012, fine dust has been a national crisis. People were depressed and devastated by the polluted air.  Because fine dust may cause critical damage, this was the main driver of the growth.

Opportunities:

The market in Korea for air cleaners is characterized by steep competition. The major, domestic electronics companies have dominated the high end of the market while at the low end, imported products are constantly trying to climb up the ladder. However, the air cleaner is not the only product in the air industry.
